So what are we learning about in 2nd grade right now?
Religion--We have made it to our chapters on First Communion! Woo-hoo! We are finishing the first chapter about how the Mass unites us and how the Introductory Rites prepare us to receive Jesus. We will begin working on the Liturgy of the Word next. Be on the lookout for flashcards that will help us learn all we need to know for this important part of the Mass. The students will also begin working on learning the Prayer After Communion as well.
English--We are learning basic capitalization and punctuation rules during our morning Tune Ups, and doing our best to apply them during our Friday Letter writing time. We are also working on all things adjectives, especially identifying them in a sentence and being able to use them in our own writing. After Spring Break we will finish up and be ready to tackle subject, predicate, and identifying action verbs in a sentence.
Reading-- We are slowly moving into reading words with various vowel teams or unusual vowel sounds. We will also begin applying some of our other phonics rules to multi-syllabic words. We are finishing up with our drawing conclusions activities and will begin to see text evidence (comprehension) work that will expect the students to be able to draw conclusions for some of their answers. We will then begin working on identifying the main idea and details to a text, as well as classifying statements as either fact or opinion.
Spelling-- Our fourth group of lists focuses on various vowel teams that can produce the unusual vowel sounds, as well as plurals and the hard/soft sounds of c and g. Practice tests are on Monday or the first day of the week, with final tests on Friday or the last day of the week. Please remember to make a master list of our Spelling words so you are ready for review tests every 6th unit. Also, we will now have 2 review words on each week's final test to help keep the students accountable for the words we are learning this year. |
Math--We are finishing module 2 of our Eureka Math Squared books. This module is all about different strategies for solving 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction problems so that each student may find the strategy that is most efficient for them. (Many of the strategies we will be working on will be asking the students to apply what they learned in our first module about place value.) While most of the work will be done in our books, there will be assignments that will help me assess the understanding your student has of the material presented. Be on the lookout for these papers in your student's Friday Folder.
Science/Social Studies--(We will be using the program called Simple Solutions for both of these subject areas.) In Science we are finishing up learning about plants and animals. We will then dive a little deeper into space (stars, the moon, the sun) before moving into a few lessons about matter. In Social Studies we have been learning about resources and are now beginning several lessons about Native Americans, early explorers, and the beginning of our country. WOW! There is a lot of new information in our Simple Solutions books! Writing-Hopefully you are enjoying our weekly Friday Letters! We are writing about our wishes and why we are lucky for the month of March. More writing topics coming soon (maybe even a research project!
Extras-- Brainbuilding activities are in full swing! Please be sure to ask your child if they have tried any of the activities and if they have earned any brain beads. We will also have Ipads that can be used for various learning apps and STEM bins to keep everyone learning even in our "down" times. We are currently reading The Doll People during snack. |
